What is the bead program?Courage Beads are designed to document and honor the journey children take when they are diagnosed with a serious illness. The bead program is an opportunity for children to tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of the many steps taken throughout their course of treatment. We acknowledge the courage displayed by each and every child during the diffi cult and challenging journey of treatment. How does the bead program work?Children who are enrolled in the Courage Beads program are given a length of cord strung with the beads that spell out their first name. A special bead is selected by the child to represent their time of diagnosis. This bead, along with a Tu Nidito bead, is strung on the cord to begin the child’s Courage Beads necklace. Beads, each representing a different aspect of care, are then strung in their sequence of occurrence, creating a meaningful chain that tells the story of the child’s journey through treatment. Beads are distributed by Tu Nidito volunteers daily from 9:30-11:00 am at University Medical Center in the Hematology/Oncology Clinic, BMT Clinic, and Inpatient Unit 3E, 3NW. Self-service bead mailboxes are available for children who are not able to receive their beads during the regular distribution times. These mailboxes are located at University Medical Center in the Hematology/Oncology Clinic, BMT Clinic, and Inpatient Unit 3E. Children can request beads on the order forms located at the bead mailboxes. Orders will be filled by the next visiting bead volunteer and placed in the mailbox with the child’s name on it. How do I enroll? There are three ways to enroll: Complete the online referral form here.
