“I have been familiar with Tu Nidito’s services for years, but not until I started volunteering for them was I truly able to comprehend the power of the grief work accomplished under their roof. By simply listening, I know that I have made a tremendous impact on the lives of these beautiful children and their hurting families. It is an honor to be a part of their healing experience. Tu Nidito makes my heart smile!” - Heather, Wednesday 1 Volunteer "Ten years ago I brought my 14 year old son, who was grieving the death of his father, to Children to Children. At first he was very reluctant to go to the group but as soon as we arrived he felt more at ease. I am convinced that his participation with Tu Nidito and all the work that he did in learning how to cope with the loss of his father, made him the man he is today. He felt his feelings instead of running from them and shared his suffering with other teens that were also grieving. Now all these years later, I am here to give back what they gave us, which is a chance to share and heal and grow. I am honored to be part of the Tu Nidito family!" - Patti, Tuesday 2 Volunteer "Volunteering at Tu Nidito has been a chance for me to get in touch with the reasons I want to pursue a career as a physician. The idea of becoming a physician was very attractive when I first began really looking at what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but I lacked the real perspective necessary to throw myself into the pursuit. This is what volunteering with Tu Nidito has given me: the real stories of children who have, in the most personal and immediate way, benefited from the efforts of other physicians in my chosen field. In my own experience, when I share with others my desire to enter the field of pediatric oncology, I inevitably hear some variation of, "Oh, that's so sad. I don't know if I could handle that," but I know from having volunteered with Tu Nidito, that there is far more joy in helping these kids than sorrow if things go poorly and they are certainly worth every bit of effort. Volunteering at Tu Nidito has been a very personal and intimate reflective experience for me as well as a chance to give something back to children who have already sacrificed more than most will in their entire lives and I am proud and honored to have been a part of that." - Erik Becker, former Tu Nidito volunteer, medical student at Duke University |
