Making Noise with Gourds and Grief

July 27, 2016

This is a creative way for kids to express their grief by making noise!

To make the Gourd into a Maraca:
Supplies Needed:
Gourd (any size)
Paint
Yarn
Fine Sand Paper
Mod Podge
Paper for filling holes in gourd
Dried Beans, small rocks or dried peas (for the noise maker!)
Drill

To Make the Gourd:
Step One: Take a dried gourd and drill one hole on top and one hole on the bottom. The drill hole should be about 1/2″ wide.

Step Two: Shake the gourd hard, over and over until all the seeds have been removed. (Helpful hint: Use a piece of a wire hanger to scrap around the inside of the gourd. This will help remove all the access seeds.)

Step Three: Take the sandpaper and gently sand the gourds until they are smooth all the way around.

Step Four: Paint top hole with mod podge and stuff the hole with paper. Then, paint over the area with mod podge. Let this dry completely.

Step Five: Pour the dried beans into gourd through the bottom hole. Test out the sound by shaking, you might want to add more or less depending on the type of noise you are looking for.

Step Six: Seal bottom hole. (Paint bottom hole with mod podge and stuff the hole with paper. Then, paint over the area with mod podge. Let this dry completely.)

Step Seven: Paint gourd into maraca in fun colorful ways! (Helpful hint: Hang gourd on a string and use spray paint to create a nice, even base coat.)
