Piecing Together Grief

August 26, 2019

An activity for children and families impacted by serious medical conditions and death.

One thing we know for certain about grief is that every person’s grief journey is different. Whether your grief is due to a loved one’s serious medical condition or the death of a special person, it’s likely that your entire family is impacted by grief. What does your family members’ grief look like? The grief puzzle is a great activity to complete together as a family, allowing each member to highlight their own unique journey.

What you’ll need:

  • Scissors
  • A large piece of construction paper
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons

  • Cut a large piece of paper into puzzle pieces, at least one piece per participating family member.
  • As a family, choose a theme for your puzzle; see some suggested themes below.
  • Using pictures, drawings, designs, or words, color your puzzle piece to represent your chosen theme.
  • When everyone has completed their puzzle piece, assemble the puzzle together and have each family member share about their piece.
  • Repeat the same process as many times as you’d like, using a different theme!

Puzzle theme ideas:

  • Adjectives that describe my grief
  • Colors that represent my grief
  • Song lyrics that describe my grief
  • What my grief looks like
  • Favorite family memories
